Home Medical Transcriptionist
from: Creating Wealth for LifeWith technology continuing to advance, earning opportunities on the internet continue to open up. Home medical transcription is a fast growing opportunity with a lot of potential for someone with the background and knowledge. Here's what medical transcription requires.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines MT as "Medical transcription is typing voice recordings made by physicians/healthcare professionals into medical reports using understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, diagnostic procedures, and treatment to create accurate records in the format required by the hospitals."
Can You Become An MT?
Determine what qualifications the industry requires -- secondary high school plus post secondary MT training. However, it may be enough to have worked in hospitals or in physicians' offices, depending on your abilities. Be sure you train with a reputed institute such as AAMT, The American Association for Medical Transcription for industry standard training. Act cautiously because there are several scamers on the prowl.
Getting the Work
There are several medical transcription companies who out source work from home based transcriptionists. You can approach them with your resume; they'll usually want you to pass a test or two with an accuracy level of up to 99%, but not less than 98%. Once you've completed the test, you can have an agreement about work, payment and telecommuting. Expecting direct contract from a hospital is asking for too much, at this stage.
The two biggest expectations for home medical transcriptionists are 99% accuracy since asking for a second attempt would mean disastrous delays and punctuality. This is because a home based transcriptionist isn't in as much control as one who is office based.
All you need to have is a computer with a broad band connection. Get a PC based or physical medical dictionary as well. The requisite transcribing software will usually be provided by your employer.
How Is the Job Scenario from the Long Time Perspective
Rest assured, demand for transcriptionists is growing faster than all professionalse. Although there are some concerns about 'speech recognition technology' and outsourcing to overseas countries, it's not really going to pose any bigger a threat than it currently is.
The earning potential for this is very good. The median hourly rate is $14, but over half of the home based medical transcriptionists earn between $10.5 and $15. Your proficiency and specialty influences the rates, to a certain extent, at which you will be paid.
